How do you target a new area?
Before I leave for a tournament, I use google earth to review the lake. Depending on the season, I look for prime areas that I want to look at when I arrive. In practice, I am trying to eliminate water and I am fishing for bites, not to catch fish. I usually have a hook protector on during practice (remember to take it off when the tournament starts.) In practice, I try to establish a shallow water pattern, as well as a deep water pattern.
What’s your go to fishing setup?
I like shallow water fishing so my gear reflects that. I always have a flippin stick with 15-20 pound fluorocarbon line with a Fat Georgie in either green pumpkin or black/blue, a spinnerbait rod with 12-15 pound fluorocarbon with a 1/4 to 1 ounce spinnerbait and some sort of topwater, usually a frog.

During the 2005 FLW Costa Series out of Cleveland, Ohio, the first day Lake Erie had 5-7 foot waves. I ran 26 miles one way to my fish, it took about 2 1/2 hours to get there. I fished for 3 hours and had 17 pounds of smallmouth when I started back. Due to a boat malfunction, my entire catch died on the 2 1/2 hour return trip. I was penalized 2 1/2 pounds for the dead catch.
